Where should a gas meter be placed?
Ideally, a meter would be installed on an external wall, no further than 2 meters from the corner of the building on either side of the front door or a sealed window. If a property boundary wall is directly in front of a public footpath, we would install the gas meter inside the property, but ideally, it should be installed outside.
Can a gas meter be installed inside?
A gas meter can be located inside a property if the building is next to a footpath (no external yard or garden), however, this is subject to a low-pressure gas connection being available. The meter should be located as close as possible to the point where the gas pipe enters the property, as this reduces the risk of gas leaks inside the property.
It’s strongly recommended that your gas meter is closed off with a good source of ventilation and away from:
- A heat source
- Where food is stored
- Combustible materials
Moving a gas meter
Crown Utilities has the expertise and technical knowledge to undertake your gas meter move with the minimum of fuss and disruption. We can reposition your gas meter to the interior or exterior of your home or office building, depending on your request.
Can a gas meter be installed outside?
Yes, a new gas meter can be installed in an external location. The meter will need to be housed in a meter box that’s secured to a permanent fixed structure so that no one can tamper with it.
Do I need to notify my gas supplier of any work?
No, you don’t need to notify your gas supplier of any alterations to the metering equipment within the boundary of your property.
However, if the gas meter is being removed because there is no longer a requirement for a gas supply to the property, you will then need to inform your supplier so you’re not still charged the daily standing rate.
Removing a gas meter
If you’ve had your gas meter removed or a building is scheduled to be demolished, you need an expert company to safely and efficiently decommission and remove it. We handle the project in an efficient manner and always work to meet your deadlines.
Do I need to arrange a gas disconnection if I am having my meter removed?
If you just need to have your gas meter temporarily removed (and then have it reconnected at a later date), you don’t need to have your gas disconnected.
Once the meter has been disconnected, you’ll have 6 months to replace or reconnect the meter before the utility provider disconnects the supply at the source. Once the gas is permanently disconnected, you will need to apply for a new gas connection.
Installing a gas submeter
Gas sub meters can be utilised by business centre managers and landlords as an effective means of accurately measuring and billing any tenants for either commercial, industrial or domestic. Our installation team can install gas sub-meters based on your specific requirements.
